My Metal Music Musings #4

Considering this is part 4, I'll get right to the point.

In each addition of this series I want to highlight a new song, a new album or just bring attention to a band or musical act I love and think deserves more listening ears. That’s it really. Just think of it as a little celebration of music. Anyway… onto My Metal Music Musings. To clarify I just like the name, it may not always be metal music.

Miss May I (Solid State Records)

My humble metal beginnings started sometime around 2006. I listened to radio rock (dad rock) long before that but the heavy stuff started for me in junior year of high school. While I had dabbled in heavier music before then, it never clicked until my best friend, Phil, showed me the ropes and from those early days on the school bus I was never the same. It started with bands like Underoath and Every Time I Die. In 2009 however one of the most influential metalcore albums ever made was released on June 23rd of 2009.

Miss May I’s Apologies Are For The Weak was a game changer for the genre and it was the debut full-length for one of the genre’s most prolific and noteworthy bands of all-time. Cut to fifteen years later and they are still kicking and despite a brief hiatus they’ve returned better than ever. This year marks the fifteenth anniversary of their debut record and to celebrate the occasion they have re-released the album re-recorded with brand new features on every single track showcasing some of heavy music’s biggest acts including Silent Planet, August Burns Red and Carnifex. In those fifteen years I’ve been a fan of MMI and this re-release is a fantastic return to their roots in celebration of their auspicious debut back when their original lineup was still in high school!

If you know and love this record, the re-recorded version is a brilliant homage to the original while remaining respectful of it and demonstrating just how killer the record truly is. The features are brutal and so much fun to discover with each track. As for the re-recorded aspects, it showcases how much the members have honed and perfected their skills. It is a perfect celebration of what was while showing off the here and now with gleeful hope for the future of the genre. Miss May I is here to stay and as a lifelong fan, I can’t wait to see what’s next for these guys.
