(Updated) Killers of the Flower Moon: Scorsese's Latest May His Be Longest Film to Date (Updated)

Updated: Apr 20, 2023

Update: It has been confirmed by Deadline that Martin Scorsese has locked in his final cut of the film clocking in under the rumored time of four hours or more. Despite not being as long as believed it is still a hefty three hours and twenty-six minutes, approximately three minutes shorter than his previous release, The Irishman. Either way, pee before the movie starts and take it easy on the beverages.

Original Post:

Set to premiere at this year's Cannes Film Festival, out of competition, Killers of the Flower Moon is rumored to be Martin Scorsese's longest film ever. Said to be anywhere from three hours and fifty-four minutes to an unthinkable four hours and sixteen minutes, this would rival the runtimes of famously long films such as Gone with the Wind, Sergio Leone's gangster epic, Once Upon a Time in America and Scorsese's most recent mob film, The Irishman which stands at three hours and twenty-nine minutes.

The mystery remains for now as even Cannes director Thierry Fremaux doesn't know the official runtime either. He spoke to Variety and said, "I don't know what the final length is, but let's say that for me it's not an issue. All I know is that it's only five minutes more than Once Upon a Time in America." Since Leone's film has three different cuts at different runtimes its official runtime is still very much in the air. No matter the length it will be one of the longest non-documentary films to ever screen at Cannes Film Festival.

Killers of the Flower Moon is based on a non-fiction novel, Killers of the Flower Moon: The Osage Murders and the Birth of the FBI by American journalist, David Grann. In the 1920's, members of the Osage Tribe in the United States are murdered under mysterious circumstances. This creates a major F.B.I. investigation involving J. Edgar Hoover.

After its May premiere at the festival, Killers of the Flower Moon will hit limited screens on October 6th of this year. Two weeks later it will have a wide release on Apple TV+.

Killers of the Flower Moon will star Leonardo DiCaprio, Robert De Niro, Jesse Plemons and Lily Gladstone.

Is a four hour plus runtime too long for you? In the age of television binging, four hours should be a breeze. But I leave that for you to debate in the comments below. As a major fan of the director, I am in for an eight hour cut if he deems it so. But that's just me of course.
